Fourteen towers that ended up doing more than security

NISTA Informationstechnik GmbH builds security, network and building technology, and the brief from a demolition contractor was a familiar one: protect a site of several hectares against theft, unauthorised access and anything else that goes wrong out there. What nobody wrote in the brief is what happened two years later, when the site management started using the same cameras to run the operation itself.

What you can take from this

  • How fourteen largely autonomous towers still feed one staffed control room
  • Why four camera positions on one mast beats four separate poles
  • What PTZ at height does for distant zones and open ground
  • How security cameras turned into an operational tool the client now depends on

The Challenge

Several hectares of ground, wide access routes, machinery and material on site day and night. For a client in the demolition business, one thing was clear: an unmonitored site this size is an easy target for theft and trespassing.

The requirements were strict. Because of the size of the site, the surveillance systems had to run largely off-grid. At the same time, every camera feed had to come together in an on-site control room staffed around the clock, so guards could respond the moment something happened. And with large open areas and distant zones to cover, powerful PTZ cameras were a must.

Hectares, Not Metres

Access roads, hazard areas and large open surfaces all had to be covered, on ground that changes shape as the demolition progresses.

Autonomous, Yet Central

Each position had to stand on its own, while every camera image still arrived in one on-site control room that was permanently staffed, so a break-in got an immediate response.

Distance and Detail

Wide-area monitoring and observation of more distant zones called for powerful PTZ cameras, mounted high enough to look across the site rather than into the nearest heap.

Operated by Site Staff

Guards and control room personnel would work with this daily, not installers. Ease of operation counted as much as the specification did.

The Solution

NISTA chose 14 TelescopicMast MSB6-Premium towers with a 6 metre mast. Three things made the difference: value for money, the rugged build and the flexibility to mount several cameras on a single mast. Each tower offers four camera positions.

On the platform, NISTA runs Hikvision end to end: PTZ and fixed cameras, network video recorders and the central VMS. A single system platform makes it easy to connect every component and manage everything centrally. Power comes from solar panels and a 200 Ah LiFePO4 battery, giving up to around 40 hours of autonomy depending on equipment and conditions. Data runs over 5G or Starlink, and all critical components are monitored remotely.

The towers are spread across the site to cover access roads, hazard zones, open ground and distant areas alike, with a range of up to around 250 metres. NISTA moves the units with its own trailer and provides the system to the client on a rental basis.

The Results

The towers have been operating for about two years. Since then, theft on site has dropped significantly.

Security and control room staff have a full picture of the entire site at any moment and can respond quickly to any incident.

The cameras do more than secure the site. The client also uses them in daily operations: to monitor overflow basins and to follow and coordinate work across the site. What started as a security measure has become an everyday operational tool.
