Fire Gives You Warning. Something Has to Be Looking.

Heat is the one site risk that announces itself before it costs you anything. Mixed waste, shredded timber, baled refuse fuel, green waste, a pallet of lithium cells returned in a bin bag: they warm up first and burn later. Regulators build on that. A fire prevention plan under an environmental permit is written around extinguishing a fire within four hours, and that clock starts when somebody notices, not when the fire starts.\r\n\r\nWhat notices is the problem. Fixed thermal on a gable end watches the yard as it was laid out on the day the bracket went up. Tipping areas get relaid, bays get restacked, a permit variation cuts stack sizes and widens separation distances, a shredder moves for a new contract. Six months later the camera is measuring an empty slab. After a serious fire, the wall it was bolted to may not be there either.\r\n\r\nThe risk is also arriving in the load. The Environmental Services Association counted more than 1,200 battery related fires across UK waste facilities and collection vehicles in 2023/24, a rise of 71 per cent in a year, at a cost the sector puts above one billion pounds. Those ignitions start wherever the delivery was tipped, which is rarely where the infrastructure is.

Thermal Wants to Look Down, Not Across

A thermal camera at ground level sees the front face of a stockpile. The hot spot is usually on top of it or inside it, and everything behind the first bay is hidden. Height converts a side view into a downward angle across the whole tipping area, which is what the analytics need in order to place a temperature somewhere specific.

A permit variation changes stack sizes and separation distances. A new contract moves the shredder. A tipping area is relaid over a weekend. A radiometric alarm trips on a temperature inside a zone somebody drew on the image. If the mast top drifts in the wind, the zone drifts with it and the spot being measured is no longer the spot that was set. Four stainless steel 316 stay cables and four stabilisers hold the head where it was aligned.

Common questions about thermal detection platforms

What a thermal camera on a mast can honestly detect, how it fits a fire prevention plan, and where the platform stops and your technology partner starts.

It spots a temperature, which is not quite the same claim. A radiometric imager and the analytics behind it will flag a bay that is running hotter than the ones beside it, often well before there is any smoke to see. Deep seated heat inside a large pile can take a long time to reach the surface, so thermal detection sits alongside pile turning, stack limits and inspection rather than replacing them. A fire prevention plan under an environmental permit is written around three objectives, one of which is being able to put a fire out within four hours. That clock starts when the fire is found, so anything that shortens detection time shortens the whole sequence. That is the practical case for early fire detection on a site nobody is standing on at night. The plan itself is site specific and is agreed with the regulator, not with a supplier, so treat a platform as one input to it. What the platform can evidence is height, stability, certification and where it stood.

The same imager often serves both, but the alarm logic is different. Fire monitoring looks for a temperature threshold or a rate of rise inside a zone drawn over a bay or a bunker. Intruder detection looks for an object of roughly human shape moving through a zone. Thermal imaging works in total darkness and holds up better than a visual camera in light smoke, haze and drizzle. Heavy rain, dense smoke and thick fog all cut the range, and thermal cannot see through glass at all. Published detection distances are measured in clear conditions, so read them as a ceiling rather than a promise, and specify the lens for the worst night rather than the best one.

It can find a hot cell earlier, and earlier is most of the battle.
